Work Experience

From 2000:

Teaching Assistant in the Computing Department Lancaster University. This Microsoft funded position was created specifically to initiate the Academic Computer Science Programme at Lancaster. I have been solely responsible for the development and installation of a 2nd year computing facility. More specifically, this post initially involved replacing a Solaris based laboratory with Windows 2000 PCs including implementing networked storage for student coursework development and on-line submission. A number of bespoke teaching resources were developed, including web based course material incorporating a secure coursework mark retrieval system, deployment of Solaris/ Microsoft news servers. The post also required ‘hands on’ teaching of practical courses including the C language and the first C# course in Europe.

During the second year of this post, I coordinated a further initiative resulting in additional Microsoft funding for a Windows CE based ‘embedded systems’ laboratory. The installation and maintenance of the lab was added to the ongoing maintenance of the second year lab and infrastructure. The file server was extended to support final year students, MSc students and first year students. The remaining third and second year labs were also upgraded, installed and maintained as part of my responsibilities.

Within the remit of this post, I have shown significant initiative in raising and managing industrial funds, recruiting and managing staff.  In addition, I have been responsible for managing the generation of ACSP related course material, including a set of ‘web service based programming challenges’, material for the operating systems, C#, and embedded systems courses on behalf of Microsoft education.

This position has also allowed me to work with other universities and companies in developing educational strategies and sharing of our experiences. The cementing of our relationship with Microsoft has led to Lancaster University computing department being one of the key figures in this area.

From 97:

Assorted programming and consultancy, including developing components written in VB, C# and C++, and design and implementation of a complete database driven system in VB. There have been numerous small additional consultations on web technologies, wireless networking and distributed data processing.

From 97:

After being Lancaster University Fylde College resident assistant dean I became dean of Fylde College in 2001. This is a very rewarding role where I help to maintain the discipline of ~900 students during term time. I have two assistants that perform the day to day discipline within the College whom report to me weekly. In addition to providing me with a keen understanding of the operation of the University, this role has also helped me develop my management and interpersonal skills. I have recently become a member of University Senate a core university policy making group.

Summer 98:

Installing and maintaining conference computing facilities at Middleware ’98 in the Lake District experiencing and overcoming the many practical, logistical and team management problems. Particular experience was gained through network administration of a wireless 802.11 infrastructure.

Statement

I currently hold a position in Information Systems Services within Lancaster University, helping develop and deploy core computing services, including the deployment and management of Microsoft Active Directory throughout Lancaster University.
