Recycling in Lancaster University Computing Department
So, how much are we recycling in the Computing Department?

Between December 2001 and 2007, we have recycled 100 dustbin bags full of cans and plastic bottles.

The bin in the Infolab C floor kitchen for recycling plastic bottles has now been removed due to the arrival of the new bins provided by the university.

What else can be recycled in the department (or on campus)?

  1. Take plastic bags to the charity shop on campus
  2. Newsprint (newspapers and magazines) and glass bottles can be recycled on campus behind Spar (Tower Avenue) and at various other recycling points around campus.
  3. January 2006: Ink Cartridges for printers and fax machines: The nearest recycling point is near the storeroom B10 behind Infolab21 reception. Kevin Williams (Estates) wrote: "Staff and students may now recycle ink jet cartridges at any one of the 11 collection locations across campus. Collection receptacles are located in all nine college foyers and LUSU reception. You may also hand over cartridges for recycling at ISS reception. Those ink jet cartridges collected are sent to our partner company Accutec who pay us for each cartridge collected. The money raised will be donated to local charities. Please note departments should continue to send used toners to ISS reception for recycling."
  4. Mobile phones: (New March 2004) STAFF AND STUDENTS CAN NOW RECYCLE THEIR OLD MOBILE PHONES and raise money for charity at the same time. The University has teamed up with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to provide a mobile phone recycling collection point in the foyer of University House. Please try to place your telephone into envelope before posting it into the collection receptacle. Additional collection points will be established in the coming weeks.
  5. Tetra paks:: According to Virtual Lancaster (8/8/07) you can now recycle tetra-paks at some locations: Tesco, Morecambe; Asda, Lancaster; George Hotel, Torrisholme; Greaves Park, Lancaster; Booths, Carnforth.
What else can you do for the environment?

  1. New: January 2007: Christmas (and other) cards can be recycled via The Woodland Trust, Tesco, and WHSmith who are running a scheme in January 2007. This and other recycling tips for Christmas trees can be found at the Lancaster City Council site
  2. The City Council provides information on the types of cans, paper, plastic, glass and foil that can be recycled. Plastic bottles, plastic cups and plastic sandwich boxes are ok to recycle, but yogurt pots and anything without the recycle logo can not be recycled. If such unwanted items find their way into the recycling process, it can ruin a whole batch of plastic. The Recycling Directory was published on June 7th 2003.
  3. Other sites for recycling are available in and around Lancaster, the locations are listed at Recycle-more
  4. Unwanted furniture and white goods can be collected by Furniture Matters, although they can't take flat pack furniture if it is dismantled (Tel. 01524 426622)
  5. Recycle your old mobile phone at Oxfam.
  6. Oxfam (and many opticians) will recycle old pairs of glasses.
  7. Use a compost bin, you can get a free one from Lancashire County Council, more info at www.compost-it.org.uk
  8. There's no such thing as junk: join the Lancaster Swap Shop email list run by John Cantor. Also see the Lancaster Computer Swapshop if you have computer bits to recycle.
  9. Buy products made from recycled material. You can buy toilet rolls made from 100% recycled paper, e.g. Nouvelle and Sainsbury's own brand called Revive.
  10. Buy wind-up clockwork chargers, torches and radios made by Freeplay
  11. Collect rainwater to use in the garden instead of a hosepipe on the tap
  12. Use energy saving light bulbs
  13. Insulate the attic to stop heat from escaping
  14. Add cavity wall insulation to your house. You can obtain grants to reduce the cost
  15. Reduce the amount of junk mail you receive by registering with the mail preference service
  16. Don't do any ironing at all
  17. Reuse plastic bags when you go shopping
  18. Make toys for your children from old bits of cardboard, plastic bottles, and sticky-backed plastic just like Blue Peter
  19. Use old plastic bags instead of buying new socks; they'll keep your feet warm
  20. Wear four extra layers of clothes in the winter instead of switching on the central heating
  21. Save water - only flush the toilet once a week

The University Environmental co-ordinator has more information on the University run schemes including computer recycling and furniture. See the Estate management Environmental web page for a map of recycling points on the campus.
