Sad Puppy Realizes a Dream OK. So I know
it's really, really sad, but today I realized a dream and we went to Macworld.
I was a late converter to the Apple faith: having flirted with, but never been
able to afford, an Apple II, my first real exposure to Macs was in '89 as a
grad student. It was love at first click and I've never looked back (though I
have to say I'm really impressed with my current PC notebook - sorry Chris).
Anyway, back to Macworld. This was fantastic. A near religious experience. It
felt like every nutter in the world was there, seeking to buy icons of their
gods in a range of translucent plastic. There was everything in iMac colors,
and I mean everything - lamps, desks, flower vases - the works. There were
also lots of great demos, goodies etc. Most useful stand was probably Adobe
doings lots of nice presentations on InDesign. Most fun was the Apple stand
where they had guys doing re-runs of parts of Steve Job's keynote every 20 minutes.
Free T-shirts to people who echoed the words of the priest (oops, speaker) the
loudest. Did we win ? Of course not. Did we try ? Oh yes :-)

It Really is a Small World OK. So how
weird is this. We have to return our hire car today and swap it for another
one. So we dutifully drive up to San Francisco airport, drop the car off at
Hertz and then stand in line to pick up a new one. We are at the counter
chatting to the sales person when I hear a "Nige" behind me. Who
should be in the queue but Steve Pink with the new woman in his life, Jan. I
mean, what are the chances. He's living in Tucson now and they had flown in
for a seminar/class in the city. Really, really weird. Anyway, we had a chat
and arranged to meet on Monday for breakfast - which led to a really nice
morning. Very strange though.
On the car front, we picked up a Toyota.
The default was a Ford Taurus but for less money we could have the Toyota, and
having had the Ford for a month I never want to have the misfortune to drive
one ever again! What fun. Best yet, it has a CD player. Wow.

Move In Today we moved into our new apartment.
Hurrah. It's lovely and very relaxing. We've gone for shades of green (no
surprise there then) for the decor and the apartment balcony looks out onto
lots of green and trees. Very tiring day, doing lots of lifting of boxes - we
live on the third floor and there is no lift - but really nice to be
"home". Here's a piccy of the apartment complex. I'll take some more
soon.

Breakfast at Tiffanys The thing I really like
about expensive hotels is the peace and quiet they provide. It's not the gold
leaf or the fancy cutlery that impresses me, it's the fact that you can sit
down for breakfast and just enjoy yourself. Today we drove up to San
Fransisco to meet Steve and Jan for breakfast at their hotel: the super swanky
Fairmont on top of Nob hill. There were six of us in total and we just
had a really nice breakfast - good food, endless coffee and juice and a really
pleasant atmosphere. It's always a holiday thing - having breakfast out - but
I feel the need to make it more of a routine :-) Here's to many more such
mornings.
