Enhancing Design Problem Solutions through Creative Problem Solving Techniques

Date

23rd May, 2005

Presenting

Paula Alexandra Gomes da Silva

Abstract

Guaranteeing the efficiency and satisfaction of the user of software applications is as important as ensuring functionality. Software development teams are aware of the importance of systems usability as never before, considering it a paramount goal of design. To fulfill that goal, evaluation plays a major role.

Our research aims at enhancing the process of finding solutions to problems identified during usability evaluation. The identification of a design problem is important, but finding an efficient, innovative and creative solution to it is crucial. We believe that looking at problems from different perspectives - in this case, including creative problem solving techniques – will improve the process.

What are bus queues and why are we videoing them?

Date

9th May, 2005

Presenting

John Rooksby

Abstract

This talk will consider potential interactions with small-display/large-display (SD/LD) applications in the underpass. I'll show you a video of people in the underpass and explain how the observable properties of what people do down there are relevant. I'll explain that
people interact down there not verbally but visibly: people look at what others are doing and people show to others what it is they are doing.

Phatic Technologies for Supporting Strong Tie Interactions

Date

2nd May, 2005

Presenting

Martin Gibbs

Abstract

By and large research in interactive design has been concerned with information technologies – technologies for the collection, processing and exchange of informational content.

This seminar paper will discuss some preliminary ideas about an alternative way to think about interactive technologies – phatic technologies – that are less concerned with capturing and communicating information and more about the establishment and maintenance of social interaction. Examples and materials to illustrate this discussion will be drawn from a recent field-based studies looking at the use of interactive technologies within intimate relationships.
