Overview of MRes Study on Usuage of Outdoor Campus Space

Date

21st February, 2005.

Presenting

Dr. Corina Sas.

Abstract

This presentation offers an overview of the work carried out by the MRes students for the Advance Interactive System Design module. Its main purpose consists of exploring how people make use of campus outdoor space, in the light of providing an input for the eCampus project. Issues like spatial behaviour, or perception of public space were of particular interest. This talk will focus mostly on the methodology employed and preliminary results.

Abstract Transducers for a Rearrangeable Interface

Date

7th February, 2005.

Presenting

Nicolas Villar.

Abstract

We have recently developed the Pin&Play&Perform system: a rearrangeable, tangible interface surface that supports the free layout and linking of physical handles to virtual controls in existing music software running on a computer.

The interface demonstrates our concept of the application of abstract transducers -objects with a recognizable form of operation but no pre-assigned functionality - as the basic building block of such an interface.

The talk will present our ideas and motivation for carrying out this work, as well as our theories of why it should provide some clear benefits over existing forms of interacting with music software. Finally, we describe our experience in using our resulting system in conjuction with a popular piece of music synthesis software.
