Research

My main interest is in the area of information visualisation and in particular use of random sampling as an effective clutter reduction technique in visualising large datasets which often results in cluttered displays. My PhD work explores this concept and presents a highly-scaleable solution in the form of global and lens-based random sampling and demonstrates the effectiveness and flexibility of the technique through implementing various sampling-based visualisations. A further contribution to the information visualisation research area is a novel criteria-based taxonomy of clutter reduction techniques that provides visualisation designers with a method to critique existing visualisations and think about new ones. I am currently employed on the VisMaster project, an EU Coordinated Action with the aim of advancing the research community for the highly interdisciplinary field of visual analytics. My role is coordinating the activities of the working group on perception and cognitive aspects of visual analytics. We held a Human Aspects of Visualisation workshop in Uppsala in Sept.

Past project:
RaDar (Related Data Visualiser) for parallel coordinates is a method of showing distribution of one of the attribute values (in rainbow colour) across other attributes. Related data at a distance, hence radar! Works nicely with the sticky 'attribute' lens.
Quantum Web Fields - visualises web site usage by clustering page-to-page links according to their popularity and visualises these as probability distributions. Actual paths through the site by current visitors can then be superimposed on the site to provide a sense of presence or awareness to the viewer.* paper
Molecular Meanderer - also visualises web site usage, but this time but using a force-directed technique arranging the page links by "what page is usually taken after me" rather than the structure of the site.* paper

Interested in traffic signs? ... probably not but you might like to see photos of what must be unique pedestrian crossing signs from the little island of Mauritius.

Some favorite activities: travelling in interesting places with Devina and family, relaxing on small islands in the indian ocean, growing veg. in my polytunnel, house construction, mountain biking, skiing, baking, light engineering (fixing cars and small tractors).
