My main interest is in the area of information visualisation and in particular use of random sampling as an effective clutter reduction technique in visualising large datasets which often results in cluttered displays. My PhD work explores this concept and presents a highly-scaleable solution in the form of global and lens-based random sampling and demonstrates the effectiveness and flexibility of the technique through implementing various sampling-based visualisations. A further contribution to the information visualisation research area is a novel criteria-based taxonomy of clutter reduction techniques that provides visualisation designers with a method to critique existing visualisations and think about new ones.
