Data Collection

We have employed an eclectic set of data collection techniques, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. This has allowed us to collect different types of data from different sources ensuring that we have a wide range of views reflected in our data.

Questionnaire

Although we are currently developing new questionnaires to collect data from different groups, our primary questionnaire has been in circulation for a number of months. The questionnaire has been hosted on the OMG's website and has been publicised via a number of different routes, including email lists and personal emails.

We have had over 200 responses to our questionnaire. The responses to questions about personal experience, roles, company size and MDE maturity tell us that the vast majority of respondents have significant software engineering experience (e.g. 44%>10 years), that they are employed in a range of different roles (e.g. 36% developers/modelers and 37% team leaders/project managers), that there was  good spread of size of company with respect to the number of people involved in software development (e.g. 52%<100 and 19%>1000) and that they were experiences in using MDE (60% having completed multiple MDE projects).

A PDF of the questionnaire showing questions and available responses is available here.

In-depth Interviews

We have carried well over 20 interviews with a range of experienced MDE practitioners. In total, our interviewees have had more than 360 years of software development experience between them and they represent about a dozen roles in 17 different companies in about a dozen different domains. The data collected to date totals almost 20 hours of recorded data and >140,000 words of transcribed data.

We do not use a script or protocol for our interviews, but a list of themes and/or common questions is available.

On-site Observational Studies

This part of our data collection is still at an early stage. However, we have have managed to collect data by collaborating with a number of colleagues around Europe. We have a number of further studies in preparation, but are always on the look out or sites that would be open to observational study. If you or your company would be willing to participate in a study of this kind, please let us know.
