Matthew Smith
BSc Computer Science

First Class Honours
Why did you choose your course?
I chose the course as it had a much more practical element to it than many other courses at equivalent universities which seem to offer a much more theoretical approach.
What did you gain from the course?
I learned a lot about the various programming techniques available, as well as the wider areas of computer science such as the professional and human issues.
What was the most exciting or interesting part of your studies?
The part that I found most interesting was the Final Year Project, as it gave me the chance to research an area of computer science that I had no prior knowledge of and then use this knowledge to design and implement my own system based upon it.
Were there enough facilities available?
Yes. There was always the resources that I needed to complete my work, without any exception that I can recall.
Did you make lots of friends at Lancaster?
Yes. I made friends with a number of people on the course, as well as the various halls of residence that I lived in and societies that I was part of.
What are you are doing now in your career?
I am a graduate developer for the Open University.
How has the course influenced your career?
I have always had a deep interest in computers and feel that I was always going to enter a computer based career. I feel that the course has given me the resources to enter at a level that I would otherwise not have been able to achieve at my current age.
