Lancaster is a friendly, bustling city with a population of 50,000 within a district population of 130,000. Lancaster has a pedestrianised central shopping centre and conveniently placed main line rail and bus stations, and a wide range of pubs, cafes and restaurants. |

UNIVERSITY SOCIAL LIFE
The social life of the University revolves around ten colleges, each with its own distinct identity, providing a focus for student life within the University. Every student and member of staff belongs to a college, and each student is allocated a personal tutor from his or her college. Each college has its own bar, common rooms and residences. Colleges are run by elected student committees and each college has a programme of social events including Christmas Dinners, shopping trips, visits to the Lake District and various nightclubs in the North West. Inter-college rivalry is reflected through a series of sporting events. |
SURROUNDING AREA
One of the most striking features of the area are the spectacular mountains of the Lake District which form an impressive backdrop looking north over Lancaster. The University itself is situated in the spacious southern reaches of Lancaster. A short walk eastward, from the campus leads to open countryside; a cycle ride will take you to villages such as Dolphinholme and Quernmore and up to the lookout post of Jubilee Tower. Venturing further afield, the Lune Valley, Lake District and
Yorkshire Dales are all within easy reach. For those looking for the amenities of a big city Manchester is easily accessible by train or car.
