Careers In Computing

Graduates with a degree in Computer Science have a wide range of career options open to them. Like graduates in most subjects those with a degree in Computer Science can pursue numerous graduate employment options. At Lancaster the course includes opportunities to develop your skills in group working, presentation and project management that will prove to be assets in almost all careers. In addition to the normal paths for graduate employment our degrees provide you with a set of technical skills that open up new and exciting possibilities. As the number and diversity of computers increases so does the range of jobs open to Computer Scientists.

Below are a few examples of jobs that require Computer Science skills:
Creating new applications and features for mobile phones
Writing computer games
Investigating cybercrime
Providing consultancy services in areas as diverse as data management and interface design
Developing new computer security systems
Creating new applications for consumer electronics companies in areas such as music downloads, digital image processing and home control
Supporting ISPs
Design of web sites and e-commerce applications

Our graduates have found employment in companies such as Sony, Nokia, IBM, Microsoft and Logica.



For those students who don't like the idea of working in an existing company there is always the opportunity to set up on their own and a number of former students have done this with considerable success. This entrepreneurial approach is well catered for with the facilities available in InfoLab21 and advice is available for students interested in pursuing this route. Many Lancaster graduates also choose to carry out further study in Computer Scicence. At the University we have a thriving graduate programme and a number of our own graduates choose to stay with us for the Masters or PhD programmes. Upon graduating these students find jobs at the cutting edge of Computer Science - often in advanced research and development labs or academia. The University Careers Service provides a number of services and activities to help you find a job after you graduate, including Personal Development Planning (LUPDP) as a means for planning for your future during the time you are at Lancaster. PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION
Our single major degrees in Computer Science, Computer Science with Software Engineering and Computer Science with Multimedia Systems are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This means that Lancaster graduates satisfy the educational requirements for admission to these professional societies, and, after a number of years work experience, can also be recognised as Chartered Engineers.
