3) Software Development Engineer Ref: A499

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) provides an opportunity to work at the boundary between academia and industry. They are ideally suited for individuals looking for careers involving significant aspects of knowledge transfer – either as academics or researchers who wish to be industry facing or as industrialists looking to build on cutting edge research generated by universities and research labs. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships are suitable for new graduates or established researchers looking to gain expertise in knowledge transfer and exploitation.

A vacancy exists for a KTP associate to work with Lancaster University and In Touch Limited working on transferring knowledge (including technologies and requirements) between the two organisations in the area of mobile and ubiquitous computing. The associate will work closely with members of Lancaster University’s internationally renowned team of researchers in the fields of mobile and ubiquitous computing under the direction of Professor Nigel Davies and Dr Joe Finney.

In Touch Limited is a dynamic small business that designs, develops and deploys mobile data solutions for major international companies. The company is based in Morecambe, Lancashire and the associate would be based at the company premises.

We expect the associate to work specifically on solutions involving the augmentation of everyday devices with identification and computing capabilities. Such solutions will range from RFID based systems to advanced prototypes of embedded computers. The University has recently received £1 million pounds of funding for a project in this area entitled NEMO (see http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/nemo/ for details of all relevant departmental activities) and the associate will have the opportunity to work closely with the NEMO team.

KTP associates without post-graduate qualifications are encouraged to register for a higher degree at the University (either at the Masters or Doctoral level) under the supervision of Professor Davies and Dr Finney.

The package includes a good base salary, a technical and personal training allowance, and the opportunity to achieve a higher degree (if appropriate, and at a reduced or no cost to you). In addition to this you will register for NVQ Level 4 in Management and will be encouraged to attain membership of a professional organisation.

Informal enquiries to Professor Nigel Davies (nigel@comp.lancs.ac.uk). For an application form, please visit http://www.personnel.lancs.ac.uk/vacancydets.aspx?jobid=A499 or telephone Personnel Services, quoting reference A499 on answerphone 01524 846549.

Closing date: Friday 24 June 2005 and only successful candidates will be notified.
