Overview of ActivitiesDavid Hutchison's research interests cover advances in architecture, services and communication protocols for networked multimedia systems, including Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms, programmable networking and also multimedia content distribution networks. Most recently his research has focussed on the resilience of computer networks and networked systems. He has served as a programme committee member for many international conferences and workshops, including IEEE Infocom and ACM SIGCOMM, ACM Multimedia, Networking, IEEE Openarch, IWQoS, IWAN, IEEE MMNS, NGC and QofIS, ICC and many others, and as a member of the editorial boards of the Journals of ACM Multimedia Systems, Computer Networks, and Computer Communications. He is Editor of the Wiley book series in Communications Networking and Distributed Systems, and one of the editors of the renowned Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) where he is responsible for the area of telecommunications and computer networks. More recently, he has served on the steering groups of the GridNets, IWSOS, BCS and e-Energy series of workshops and conferences. In the recent past, he has been a member of the UK Grid Technical Advisory Group, and chair of the Grid Network Team responsible for advising on the communications infrastructure used by e-Science applications. He was a member of the Grid Research Oversight Committee within the Global Grid Forum (GGF), and chair of the UKLight Technical Advisory Group. He has also been a member of the JISC Committee for the Support of Research and an advisor to the DTI for the UK delegation to the EC Information Society Technologies R&D programmes. In January 2006 he was appointed to the membership committee of the UKCRC (UK Computing Research Committee). He is a founding member of the Digital Communications Knowledge Transfer Network (DC-KTN).
ProfileDavid Hutchison is Director of InfoLab21 and Professor of Computing at Lancaster University and has worked in the areas of computer communications, networking and multimedia systems for more than 25 years. He has completed many UK, European and industry-funded research contracts and published many papers as well as writing and editing books in these and related subject areas.
He was a member of the standing UK EPSRC Communications and Distributed Systems (CDS) Committee for several years and more recently has served on various Communications Panels that assess grant applications from the UK academic community. He has often assisted the EPSRC on research programme planning and was a technical expert adviser to the Office of Telecommunications (OFTEL) before it was integrated into OFCOM. He is frequently invited as an expert evaluator and reviewer for the European Commission in the areas of communications and networking, and has chaired many review panels for the EC. He receives many international invitations from Universities, research councils and industry to examine PhD theses, to serve on advisory boards and conference panels, and to give advice. He was a founding member of the IST FP6 Network of Excellence on Emerging Networking Technologies and Experiments (E-NEXT) that created the highly successful CoNEXT conference series. He now focusses on network resilience research, and works on the Resilinets project with James Sterbenz at Kansas University (see Resilinets) and is one of the founders of the ResumeNet FP7 project in the Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) area. Also, he is one of the investigators in the IU-ATC project involving BT Research, the Indian Institutes of Technology and several UK Universities, and in the new FIRM project at MediaCityUK.
