For the benefit of those new to the department, RARS
is a totally informal lunchtime arrangement whereby
*R*esearch *A*ssistants/Associates and *R*esearch *S*tudents
can meet on
a regular
basis
.
The RARS sessions were set up so RAs and RSs in CSEG (but latterly to anyone in the Computing Department who would like to join in) could get together regularly to discuss their research and any problems they were having either with their work or with the department. A sort of self help type session. They also provide any individual RARS with a forum to practice any presentation which he/she may be giving at a conference / workshop / viva etc. The advantage of doing this is not only the practice but the practical feedback from others who have been through it all before.
We have a mailing list - rars - which we try to keep up to date and which anyone can use to contact the RARS. If you are not on this list and want to be, please email the list coordinator.
The sessions are usually every other Tuesday in C29 (previously skylab) between 1:00 and 2:00 pm. We take our lunch and some beverage of some sort and try to make an occasion out of it.
Quite a lot of new bods never come and join us on these occasions. This may be because they don't know about RARS, because they are too shy to join in or just plain don't want to. What ever the reason there is no need to feel barred - so come and give it a try.
Recently we have started accumulating a bank
of useful bits of information which may, or may not, help a new rarser.
