After working in the computing industry since
1966, I came to Lancaster University
in 1990
to study for a degree in Computer Science which I was awarded in 1993.
I was not, therefore, so much a mature student
as an overripe
one
!

Having obtained my degree I stayed with the Computing
department and am now a Research Associate.
As the only member of the department with long term commercial, mainframe
work experience,
I have been working on research projects
which involve Legacy Systems.

When I left industry to become a student I was working freelance as
a senior programmer/analyst with FI Group plc.
Give me a COBOL or PL/I system using DB and TP IBM mainframe technology
and I was
as happy as a pig in a midden. Now those days are in the dim and distant
past
and I'm battling with Java and client server systems; trying desperately
to keep up with the youngsters and
failing miserably
:(
Still, as long as there are legacy systems to look at, there's work for dinosaurs the likes o' me :))

My husband and I have many interests, some of which we pursue together
(quiet please) and some of which we don't.
As a result of this we found we had very little 'spare' time so, many
years ago, we
consigned the telly to the dustbin, the only place for a piece of modern
technology which does more to spread discontent
than any other single factor in our
modern world.
