Mark Banfield graduated from Lancaster University in 1996 with a degree in Computer Science. Following this, he joined the Distributed Multimedia Research Group as a research assistant. During his time with the group, he has worked on a number of UK and European projects, including WAND, ReTINA, Eurescom P926 Caspian and Alpine. The most recent Eurescom P926 and Alpine projects both examined various architectures and services for programmable and active network technologies. He has recently been awarded his PhD, which looked into combining newly emerging active network technology with open signalling techniques to enable rapid service creation by telecommunications operators. He is now based mainly in Vienna (Austria), working on behalf of Lancaster University as a subcontractor to Telekom Austria (the Austrian ex-PTT). Mark is involved in Telekom's transition from telephony provider to becoming a multimedia company. Specifically he is considering the role of multicast and IPv6 in the support for multimeida services, and is participating in the EU IST funded GCAP project.
