Courses

The links to the courses below provides access to lecture notes, class handouts and other teaching material associated with courses that I have presented in recent years. These change from time to time - I have only retained the most recent versions of the course here.

Systems Engineering (MSc, Lancaster)

This course is presented to MSc students and is intended as an overview of systems engineering. It is presented as a 1 week course with class contact from 0900 until 1700 everyday. The major problem was how to fill the slots without tedious lecturing. My approach was based around 2 lectures per day, followed by class reading sessions with presentations of case studies, discussions and videos in the remaining slots. Overall, students liked the 1-week presentation style.

Critical Systems Engineering (BSc, Lancaster)

This course was presented to final-year (senior) computer science major students and is concerned with software engineering techniques for critical software systems. My approach was based around a 2 hour presentation slot where the first 50 minutes or so was a lecture on a topic followed by a short break then 50 minutes on a case study or example which related to the topic. Students were provided with notes and handout materials which they were expected to read to supplement the lecture and case study.
