North West Grid
Project Dates
October 2005 to September 2007
Project Description
The NWDA funded North-West Grid Project involves a number of universities in the North-West of England who are collaborating on various aspects of Grid computing. The specific work at Lancaster involves the application of
Lancaster's innovative Grid middleware approach, known as GridKit, to Grid-based e-environmental science scenarios. The current scenario under investigation where the GridKit approach could be a useful application is the area of flood predicition. The Environmental Science department at Lancaster currently performs flood predicition using algorithms driven by data collected from pressure sensors deployed in areas prone to flooding. From this data collected the Environmental Science department can perform analysis and determine future flood patterns.
Currently, the process of sensor deployment and data collection is rather simplistic which does not support the dynamic deployment of new sensors, only relies on one communication medium, has no support for failure detection/recovery and cannot be easily integrated with other services. Our aim is to address these deficiencies by using technologies developed in the GridKit project.
We expect our results to significantly improve the deployment process of sensors in a wide variety of e-science scenarios not just in the flooding scenario described above. We also hope to provide mechanisms using the GridKit to improve the integration of such Grid-based sensor networks into other web-services. Finally, the experience gained from using GridKit will help improve its implementation and develop new network open-overlays.
