The aims of this work was to uncover the requirements placed upon database systems by the new application area of CSCW. The major problem indicated is that of database systems, in their quest for consistency, make multi-user systems appear to be single user. Each user of a DBMS has the illusion that they are the sole current user of the system. Without awareness of others presence and activity, collaboration is rendered difficult, if not impossible. The results of this work fed into the COMIC project and to the CEC CoTECH working group on groupware environments.
