Introduction This project is focused on the research theme of consumer health informatics and the investigation, documentation and evaluation of information giving services. We are interested in the design of healthcare information giving services and the possibilities offered by future ICTs. The emphasis in this study is on understanding the everyday, practical accomplishment of information giving work in the NHS. The overall objective of the research is to uncover, through an ethnographic study of two systems in use, the nature, value and possible future development of the information systems currently being utilised. The Project Team This research is a multidisciplinary collaboration between members of the Cooperative Systems Engineering Group in the Department of Computing at Lancaster University, and the Division of Informatics and the Research Centre for Social Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. The Case Studies Two case studies have been undertaken. An ethnographic study of a mental health telephone line and an ethnographic and conversation analytic study of a poisons and toxins telephone line.
