Searching using Ariadne: Tour 1

This was a search undertaken by a graduate student doing a Masters Course in Womens Studies. She was interested in studying female transvestism. The search was done using the OPAC system of Lancaster's University Library.

Here we see the later stages of her first search. She is doing a title search on the word "androgeny" and then looking at some of the results of that search. Title search on Androgeny

Note how the two-dimensional card representation in Ariadne indicates how in this part of her search she goes 'down' from the main menu to do a title search and then oscillates, looking at certain entries in the list of titles and returning to the list.

Although quite familiar with this OPAC, the representation of her search graphically(!) illustrates that she probably is not aware of one of the options; the ability to move from one item in a list (the bottom level cards) backwards or forwards directly to the next item without having to go via the menu.

The next pages expand the details of this search activity.
