Screendumps of ARIADNE
The following pages include some screendumps from our studies of ARIADNE in use. They
illustrate some of the functionality of the system and its potential to support
learning and collaboration.
Note: each page contains one or more screendumps and so may take some time to load.
For a description of the system, check out our
CSCL95 paper.

Searching for Transvestites.
This was a search undertaken by a graduate student
doing a Masters Course in
Womens Studies. She was interested in studying female transvestism.
The search was done using the OPAC system of Lancaster's University Library.

Memory and planning.
This was a BIDS search undertaken by a group of four undergraduate Psychology students as
part of a group-based coursework assignment. They had to pick a general topic in
Cognitive Psychology and then each pick a sub-topic to investigate in depth. At this
stage they were browsing the database in order to get ideas on a general topic they
all agreed on.
ARIADNE captures the users' input (key strokes) and the database/library system's output
(text-based screen dumps).
These are then combined to form a series of command-output pairs,
each pair being represented as an item in the ARIADNE browser.
The trace of input-output pairs from interaction with a library database can also be
used to generate a sequence of Web pages.
Each page shows the state of the screen when using the database system and the
command that the user entered to get the next screenful of information.
A sample of these Web pages is available online.
