Middleware'98 will be the premier conference on distributed systems platforms and open distributed processing in 1998. The conference is a synthesis of the major conferences and workshops in this area into a single international event. Representatives of ICODP (International Conference on Open Distributed Processing), ICDP (International Conference on Distributed Platforms) and SDNE (Services in Distributed and Networked Environments) are included on the programme committee. The scope of Middleware'98 is the design, implementation, deployment and evaluation of distributed systems platforms and architectures for future networked environments. Highlights of the conference include a high-quality technical programme, tutorials, invited speakers (Annraí O'Toole of IONA Technologies and Joseph Sventek of Hewlett Packard Labs), demonstrations and poster presentations, all held in one of Britain's most outstanding areas of natural beauty. A full and varied social programme has been arranged for the conference. This includes a welcome reception and conference dinner, a boat trip on Lake Windermere and a programme of events for accompanying persons. Middleware'98 attracted over 150 technical submissions, many from high quality research institutions. The programme committee have assembled an exceptionally strong programme which covers core systems issues (e.g. ORB architecture/engineering, mobile objects, component architectures), large scale systems issues (e.g. scalability, availability, integrity, security, type safety) and application services issues (e.g. web integration, event services, workflow systems, application case studies).
