A Message from the General Chair

Welcome to Middleware'98 and to the Lake District. As you will probably be aware, we have made significant changes to the conference this year. Middleware'98 represents the synthesis of a number of related conferences and workshops, namely ICODP (International Conference on Open Distributed Processing), ICDP (International Conference on Distributed Platforms) and SDNE (Services in Distributed and Networked Environments). There has also been an associated shift in emphasis in the technical scope of the conference as reflected in our new title. We hope you like the changes and welcome any feedback to assist with the future evolution of this conference.

As General Chair, I would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people who have contributed to the planning and organisation of this conference. The various committees have worked extremely hard in creating this event, especially given the number of submissions we received. Special mentions are also due to the local team of Geoff, Nigel, Jayne, Barbara, Jochen and Stephen for their tireless and often unseen efforts. I am also grateful for the support offered by IFIP TC6 WG6.1 and to our considerable industrial sponsorship. Without their support, many aspects of the event would not have been possible.

In conclusion, I believe that we have an excellent technical programme designed to encourage interaction and discussion, an outstanding location, and an interesting and varied social programme. I look forward to an exciting event.

Professor Gordon S. Blair
